About Health by ZIP
Health by ZIP is an independent public-data reference site. It republishes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's PLACES estimates, 40 model-based health measures for 32,520 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, 29,923 incorporated and census-designated places, 3,143 counties and every state, and places each figure beside its county, state and the nation with the confidence interval CDC attaches to it.
Health by ZIP is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The estimates are CDC's; the presentation, the comparison wording, the state aggregates and any errors in processing are this site's.
What it is for
Residents, public-health staff, clinics, journalists, planners and people comparing places to live use the same CDC files. CDC's own tools show one area or one measure at a time; this site adds the report card of all 40 measures for one area, the county, state and national comparisons written by a fixed confidence-interval rule, the state figures aggregated by CDC's published method, the county tables for every measure and the record of what each release changed.
What it leaves out
- Individuals. PLACES estimates describe an area's adult population as a whole; nothing here describes, predicts or advises any person.
- Rankings of overall health. CDC says the estimates should not be used that way; areas are compared measure by measure, and only with their intervals.
- Trends. CDC says the model does not support tracking local change over time; earlier releases are listed for reference without change words.
- Advice. The site reports statistics. It is not medical advice and does not recommend anything.
Funding
The site is free and funded by advertising that is clearly labelled. Advertisers have no influence over which areas appear or how their figures are presented.
Updates and corrections
The site is rebuilt daily from committed snapshots of each PLACES release and checks data.cdc.gov for a new release. The 2025 release is current. If a figure here differs from CDC's, CDC's is authoritative; see corrections and the methodology for how the two can differ.
